The elements which had been important to the Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971), when he designed the sea water wave swimming baths on Fehmarn’s south coast were also the focus of our work. A pool by the sea, the wide horizon, the horizontal nature of the structures.
To extend the listed ensemble to an open air pool with sauna and wellness area we opted for a simple cube form, enclosing some land but widely open to the sea, with sliding glass facades for a perfect view. The wave pool, redeveloped in line with requirements for historical monuments, clearly remains as a solitary sculptural form. Linked via the elevated ground level of the wave pool, the cube form integrates the leisure area and the sauna.
The two-level foyer, locker rooms on the ground floor and the sauna with wellness area are grouped around the central relaxation area. The catering facilities on the upper level and the wind-protected roof terrace provide magnificent views of the fascinating colours and forms of the clouds and the sea.
